How do cloth nappies work?

At Kookabubs, we're passionate about providing natural baby care solutions that prioritise your little one's well-being and the health of our planet. In this blog post, we'll dive into the realm of eco-friendly cloth nappies, exploring how they work and why they're an excellent choice for both your baby and the environment.

Over the years, cloth nappies have evolved to offer modern parents a convenient and environmentally conscious nappy choice. These nappies typically consist of three core components:

  1. Organic Absorbent Insert: This is the part of the cloth nappy responsible for soaking up moisture. Inserts are usually made from a combination of natural fibers like cotton, hemp or bamboo, providing a soft and absorbent layer for your baby.
  2. Water Resistant Outer Layer: To prevent leaks, cloth nappies are equipped with a water resistant outer layer. This layer, often made of PUL (polyurethane laminate) or TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), keeps moisture contained within the nappy while allowing air circulation.
  3. Inner Stay-Dry Lining: The inner lining of the nappy is designed to keep your baby's skin feeling dry. This layer is typically made from AWJ (athletic wicking jersey), suedecloth or microfleece, creating a stay dry barrier that wicks moisture away from your baby's delicate skin.
Putting Cloth Nappies On Your Baby

Using cloth nappies is simpler than you might think. Here's a step-by-step guide to putting them on your little one:

  1. Prep the Insert: If using a pocket-style nappy, stuff the absorbent insert into the pocket. For all-in-one or all-in-two designs, the insert may be attached or snapped into place.

  2. Adjust the Size: Many cloth nappies are designed to be adjustable to accommodate your baby's growth. Adjust the rise snaps as needed to achieve a snug fit (this can be done after step 3 if you're unsure which setting to use).

  3. Place the Nappy: Lay your baby on the open nappy, ensuring the absorbent part is properly positioned in the center. Pull the front up and secure the nappy using the wing snaps.

  4. Check the Fit: Ensure a comfortable fit by checking for snugness around the waist and legs. A proper fit helps prevent leaks and ensures your baby stays comfortable.

Why Embrace Cloth Nappies?

  1. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly: Cloth nappies epitomise sustainability by offering a reusable and environmentally friendly alternative to disposable nappies. Choosing cloth means actively participating in the well-being of your baby and the Earth. Did you know a baby/toddler will go through approximately 6000 nappy changes from birth to the time they are toilet trained? That is a lot of landfill.
  2. Cost-Effective Natural Baby Care: While the initial investment in cloth nappies may be higher, the long-term savings become evident. These nappies can be reused for subsequent children or resold after use, making them a wise and economical choice.
  3. Health-Conscious: Embracing natural baby care includes considering your baby's health. Cloth nappies are known for being gentle on a baby's skin, reducing the likelihood of nappy rash and irritation.
